ISO/TC 207/SC 1

OUR VISION AND MISSION

Our vision is to develop and implement robust environmental management systems that empowers organizations to manage their interaction with environmental aspects, to protect the environment, enhance resilience to climate change, and contribute to the well-being of present and future generations

We develop standards for environmental management systems that guide organizations in improving their environmental performance, reduce ecological footprints, and achieve their sustainability goals. We are committed to promoting innovation, stakeholder involvement and continuous improvement in environmental practices across industries.

Interpretation of ISO 14001

To help clarify the intent of ISO 14001, the ISO process allows for interpretations to be provided by each National Standards Body (NSB). Find your NSB here: ISO - Members

SC 1 follows a process for managing interpretations of ISO 14001. It is important to note that interpretations do not change the requirements in ISO 14001 but are intended to give users a better understanding of ISO 14001.

SC 1 process:

-      it is the responsibility of each NSB to respond to any interpretation enquiry or request for guidance it receives, or forward this to SC 1 (the SC 1 response will be returned to the NSB for inclusion or consideration in their formal response);

-      if a formal NSB response is provided to the user this is to be submitted to the SC 1 Committee Manager and reviewed annually at the SC 1 plenary;

-      the SC 1 compiled responses file is made available to the public via ISO Livelink and the SC 1 website (this website), and shared with relevant groups as outlined in clause 6 of its process;

-      follow-up questions on the interpretation response should be referred to the NSB where the interpretation request originated.

Please note that some NSBs use the term ‘clarification of intent’ instead of the term ‘interpretation’.
